7 Peaks Domestique Series prize winners

The rides are finished, the entries are in, and now it’s time to draw the winner of the major prize in the 7 Peaks Domestique Series. Before we do that though, here are a couple of stats about the series that might interest you.

Between October last year and February this year we hosted 12 rides as part of the 7 Peaks Domestique Series. In those 12 rides, we had a combined total of 924 climbs completed — an average off 77 people per ride. Considering Andy and I would have been happy with 20 people per ride, it’s a result we’re very happy with.

The smallest ride we had was the afternoon session on our first trip to Mt. Buller, when 14 people rocked up. The small crowd was hardly surprising given how horrendous the weather was –climbing the mountain was like riding upstream and the thunder and lightning only made things more ridiculous.

The biggest crowd we had was on our second trip to Lake Mountain when 161 people turned up. And that wasn’t the only time we had 100+ to a ride; our second trip to Mt. Baw Baw saw a crowd of 116 tackle that great climb. I’m not sure if there’s been a bigger group of cyclists attempting Mt. Baw Baw in one day, aside from the Baw Baw Classic.

But of course, the 7 Peaks Domestique Series wasn’t all about the numbers; it was about getting people on their bikes, riding in the hills, meeting new people and having fun in the process. I think we can safely say we achieved that.

And so, to the prize draw.

For every ride in the 7 Peaks Domestique Series you did with us, you got an entry in the draw. So that’s 924 entries. And we also said that if you completed any of the 7 Peaks during the Audax Alpine Classic, the 3 Peaks Challenge, the Scody High Country Cycle Challenge or on the Easter long weekend — and told us that you did — then you got an entry for those as well. So that left us with a total of 959 entries in the draw.

We went and picked a number at random between 1 and 959 — 227 — and matched that up with the rider’s name in our 7 Peaks Finishers spreadsheet. And so, the winner of the Mavic Cosmic Elite wheelset, courtesy of our friends at Cycling Express, is Tony Egan. Congratulations Tony!

The folks at McLennan Cycles in Daylesford have also given us a very swish merino wool jersey to giveaway. The winner of that prize, #683, is Brian Beardon. Congrats Brian!

We don’t have a prize for the best finish-line pose in the series but if we did, it would definitely go to Lee “Hollywood” Turner. That’s his effort at the top of this post (with image courtesy of Nigel Welch).

A big thank you again to everyone that came along and made the 7 Peaks Domestique Series so memorable. And a huge thank you, once again, to our tremendous support crew that did such a great job of looking after us.

And finally, we’ve put together a list showing the names of everyone that rode at least one climb in the series (including the bonus days), arranged by the number of climbs completed. (I wish someone else had done every climb so it doesn’t look like I’m big-noting myself!)

Until next time, thanks for reading!

11 Replies to “7 Peaks Domestique Series prize winners”

  1. Fantastic effort Matt & Andy!! It’s great to see so many people participating in the series. I know everyone at Winners were really happy to have been able to help out!

  2. Thanks to Matt and Andy for organising the 7PDS rides. Thanks to the sponsors for providing great freebies and prizes. I’ve now bought more Winners bars than I’ve received for free, so the freebies had the desired effect on me.

Although I only did 3 climbs with you, I did finally manage to tick off all 7 peaks over the course of the 2012/13 season. The 7 Peaks Domestique Series gave me the inspiration and confidence to complete all of the climbs. I even managed to climb Buffalo 3 times in one day on the day of the Alpine Audax.

  3. Well done to the winners, and as most others have said, well done to Matt & Andy on a great idea, and an awesome series.
    Bring on the next one!

  4. Your enthusiasm and encouragement for anyone to ‘come along, give it a go and we’ll be there backing you’ made climbing mountains an achievable goal for so many that never would have considered it.

Your organisation and support got me to do the first Lake Mountain ride in October and obtain my first ever 7 Peaks ‘stamp’ (I’d ridden Buffalo 12 months prior but didn’t do the passport). Although I’d planned to do more rides in the series that didn’t eventuate but your vision planted the seed and inspired me to have a go at completing all 7 Peaks.

So Matt, Andy and all your support crews, thank you for having this vision and taking the time to plan and make this series happen 🙂

  5. It was a great pleasure to donate a jersey for the 7 Peaks Series. I was hoping to do the series although I managed to get out of it with a good Doctor’s certificate. I ruptured my achilles spending months in a moonboot and yes I know Jens would have effed the other one to even them up then done the 7 Peaks Series.

Hopefully the series will be run again next season. Its misty eyed sort of stuff, a group of people doing something awesome for people they dont even know of in a lot of cases. Thats not just the two skinny dudes who like climbing mountains but all the family and friends that put in all that support to make the series possible. All the written reports have been fantastic as well. To Brian congratulations on the jersey, I hope you find it nice and comfyand you more than deserve it. We might do some more this year when we release our next stainless steel frame. I look forward to supporting the series again next season if it goes ahead with something a little more hardware oriented and Andy I will do all the peaks on the Mclennan Mistral 39/53, 12/25. There we go I said it.

Cheers all and glad you had a great series!
    Cheers

  6. WOW looking forward to the very swish merino wool jersey, thats made my day.
Thanks to Matt & Andy for organising the series and getting the sponsers, and thanks to the helpers Tammy, Sharon, Maria and others for doing the long boring tedious jobs of looking after us and keeping us safe.
900+ entries is something to be very proud of.

  7. I did 5 with your guys, 2 with the spirit of 7 Peaks Series, I guess the spirit doesn’t count :). The fact is, there is no way we could complete our first 7 Peaks without the motivation, encouragement, fantastic organisation and team work from your guys. Looking forward for the 2013-2014 series, hopefully will see again of those familiar faces and new faces as well.

  8. Whoa whoa hold the phone, Matt living up to his name – it’s only appropriated that ‘The Climbing Cyclist’ takes top honours :)…thanks for organising it guys, really enjoyable event/s

  9. Congratulations to Tony and Brian!

Most of all though, congratulations to Matt and Andy on organising such a fantastic series of rides. It was worth every vertical metre!

Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us all later this year.

Well done to everyone else who either rode along side and kept others company or those who supported the riders along the journey with the energy food and water.
Most of us probably wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for you.
