When I first heard about Bicycle Victoria’s 3 Peaks Challenge I thought it sounded like a fantastic challenge but well beyond my reach as a recreational cyclist. But, in the euphoric afterglow of this year’s Around the Bay in a Day my brother Brendan and I decided to take the plunge. We may well be in over our heads.
The 3 Peaks Challenge is an epic 230km slogfest that starts and ends in Falls Creek and climbs the Tawonga Gap, Mt. Hotham and the newly sealed Bogong High Plains Road up the back-way to Falls Creek. That’s around 4200 vertical metres of climbing, the equivalent of climbing the 1 in 20 about 15 times.
With Brendan getting back from the U.K on New Years Day, we will soon start ramping up our fitness levels in order to try and complete the inaugural 3 Peaks Challenge on March 7 2010.
As we train our way toward that date in early March this blog will serve as a training diary and a sneak peek into the world of the recreational cyclist who is looking for the ultimate challenge. We will post regularly, detailing our training rides in both text and video in order to provide an insight into the process. I hope you can join us.
