Ol’ Dirty 2019

What do you get when you combine '80s hair metal, a sleepy town in the Yarra Valley, bikes of all different kinds, a whole variety of road and trail surfaces, and 500 cyclists ready for a good time? Hells 500's 2019 Ol' Dirty, of course. Read more “Ol’ Dirty 2019”

Ol' Dirty 2018

The eighth edition of Hells 500's Ol' Dirty was the best yet. A brilliantly executed theme, a stellar course and a great crew made for one of the best days I've had on the bike in a long time. Read more “Ol' Dirty 2018”

Ol' Dirty 2015

Always a late-winter highlight, Ol' Dirty is a Hells 500 event in which several hundred riders take to quiet and muddy roads on road bikes, having a lot of fun along the way. Here's how the 2015 edition of Ol' Dirty unfolded from my perspective. Read more “Ol' Dirty 2015”

In search of snow: a Donna Buang winter ride

There's something strangely appealing about the idea of riding up a mountain in winter, with the promise of catching some snow at the top. It's something I've tried to do in recent years, but with limited success. Last Sunday was different. Read more “In search of snow: a Donna Buang winter ride”

Everesting Yarra Street: 203km, 13 hours and 159 laps

A few years back Shane Miller did 100 laps of the popular Yarra Street climb in Melbourne's inner east, earning himself a place in local cycling folklore. On Sunday, Paul Dalgarno, the rider formerly known as the Donvale Demon, set out to do his own epic ride on Yarra Street, attempting to 'Everest' the climb. Here's Paul's story. Everesting: a Hells 500 epic

It's been nearly a year since the last Hells 500 epic -- Crux -- and this year's ride is scheduled to take place this weekend. It's called Everesting and it's almost certainly the hardest Hells 500 epic yet. Read more “Everesting: a Hells 500 epic”

Domestique 7 Peaks Series 2013/14: Mt. Baw Baw

For the second ride in our Domestique 7 Peaks Series we took on one of the hardest of the seven climbs: Mt. Baw Baw.
